Visit Amalienborg Palace – one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful attractions

Amalienborg Palace is one of Copenhagen’s key tourist attractions, and it's easy to see why. The palace, which is now the royal family’s winter residence, is one of Europe’s most beautiful palaces in the rococo style, and the palace is a candidate for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In addition, Amalienborg Palace and the Royal Life Guards, with their distinctive uniforms and changing of the guard every day at 12.00, have become a symbol of Copenhagen that as good as makes them a must-see when you are visiting the capital.

Guided tour of Amalienborg Palace

Amalienborg consists of four palace buildings that surround the eight-edged palace square with an equestrian statue in the middle. The palace was built in the early 1750s and was originally built for the Copenhagen nobility and their families, but the royal family took over the palace buildings after the fire at Christiansborg Palace in 1794. Today, the palace buildings are named after the regent who first lived in them. Today, the regent couple live in Christian IX’s Palace when they are in Copenhagen, and Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary live with their children in Frederik VIII’s Palace. Christian VIII’s Palace is home to the Amalienborg Museum, where you can visit Frederik IX’s workroom and Queen Louise’s salon. Christian VII’s Palace is also open to the public and has received awards for its beautiful restoration, which has preserved the palace’s beautiful interior. Tours of the palace are available at weekends in the period July-September.
